Bikini waxing is a quick and simple hair removal procedure with fans up and down the country. Over in minutes, the effects - smooth, hair free skin - last for weeks. With professional therapists and quality products, bikini waxing is relatively pain free - any pain you do feel shouldn’t last any longer than an hour or so after the procedure.
Most salons use either disposable strip wax or, more commonly, hot wax. Hot wax is heated until it’s runny and sticky but not so hot that it burns when in contact with the skin. It should feel warm when applied.
All of our salons use disposable applicators to apply the wax and never, ever, double dip! One applicator, one application. Next application, new applicator. Always. Your therapist will then apply a fresh piece of muslin on top of the wax, press down hard, then immediately rip it away in the direction of hair growth taking all of the hairs with it.
Any little hairs left behind will be expertly plucked away with tweezers and a cooling, soothing balm applied to the whole area. You can expect the area to look a little red but by the following day you’ll be left with super smooth, hair free skin.
Bikini waxing can be anything from a simply tidy up, all the way up to the Hollywood of bikini waxes, the err, Hollywood. A standard bikini line wax removes hair that appears over the top or down the sides of a modest pair of knickers, and any hair that grows down the legs. A Hollywood removes all bikini area hair on the top, middle, sides and round the back.
A Brazilian bikini wax is more Hollywood than a standard wax, with just a little bit of hair left. It removes all of the hair in the middle, down the sides and around the back, leaving a small neat patch on the top. It’s the most popular bikini wax.
The small patch of hair left can be any shape you like, but the most commonly requested shape is the ‘landing strip’, a thin vertical line of hair. But you can have a triangle, a square or even a heart shape! Beware anything too complicated though, as waxing against the direction of hair growth can result in ingrown hairs, which can become swollen and ugly and ruin any clever topiary you’ve had. Not to mention how painful they can be.
If it’s your first bikini wax, or it’s the first with a new therapist, you might feel a bit awkward. A good salon will give you a private room to change in and paper knickers to wear throughout. Your therapist can simply move them to the side to get to each area. And remember, experienced therapists have performed hundreds of bikini waxes and yours is just another one of them.
A Brazilian wax results in a neat, tidy, fuss free bikini line. You won’t have to worry about a stray hair on the beach or in the pool letting you down.
Ingrown hairs are rare but can be prevented by exfoliating regularly between waxes. Try to avoid shaving between waxes as the blunt regrowth can cause lumps and bumps which aren’t easy to wax over. Tempting as it is, trimming hairs too short can be difficult to pick up with wax too, resulting in an uneven finish and a lot of plucking!
No matter how good home waxing strips are on your legs, waxing your own bikini line is tricky and takes guts! It’s really best left to the professionals. Whilst shaving is easier, it only lasts a day or two and the regrowth causes itching in an area you don’t really want to be bothering you on a daily basis.
